Applications

What does your centrifuge need to do? Start with your sample and workflow—not speed alone. Explore selection criteria and relevant Herolab product options for your application.

TS 4.200 swing-out rotor
Rotor example: suitability depends on the approved combination of centrifuge, rotor and vessels.

Sample preparation & separation

For separation steps in research, development and industrial quality control, such as separating suspended components or preparing samples for subsequent analysis. The specific procedure determines the required equipment.

Selection criteria

  • Sample type, vessel geometry, fill volume and number of samples per run.
  • Required relative centrifugal force (RCF), run time and temperature.
  • A suitable fixed-angle or swing-out rotor and compatible adapters.
  • Material compatibility and, where applicable, requirements for closed vessel systems.

The permitted speed depends on the complete combination in use. Matching vessel dimensions alone do not establish compatibility.

Auto R3 centrifugal concentrator
Auto R3 – the current product in this centrifugal concentration range.

Sample concentration

Centrifugal concentration evaporates solvent under vacuum to reduce sample volume. Suitability depends particularly on the sample, the solvent and the permitted sample temperature.

Match the system to the sample

  • Specify solvents and mixtures, starting volume and target final volume.
  • Consider vessels, sample throughput and temperature sensitivity.
  • Match the concentrator, vacuum pump and, where required, cold trap.
  • Assess material resistance, vapour capture and safe exhaust handling for the specific process.

Auto R3 is currently the focus of this product line. Available pumps, cold traps and accessories are agreed for each enquiry; not every combination is automatically suitable.

Automated sample workflows

For workflows in which samples are loaded, centrifuged and transferred using robotic handling. The centrifuge must fit the sample-handling process, control system and safety concept of the overall installation.

Define before integration

  • Vessels, loading patterns, gripping points and access.
  • Positioning, process steps and required throughput.
  • Control interfaces, status signals and fault behaviour.
  • Responsibilities for integration, safety assessment and acceptance.

RobotCen and automation

Connectivity is not the same as robotic integration

When selected by the customer, SmartCen adds software and the associated hardware to the chosen centrifuge for agreed operation, monitoring and networking functions. The delivered instrument carries the SmartCen designation together with the corresponding model identification. Robotic sample handling is planned separately.

Application-specific workflows

Special vessels, process conditions or operating requirements may call for an adapted configuration. Herolab assesses technical feasibility against the actual application.

Information for a technical assessment

  • Description of the sample and intended process outcome.
  • Vessel drawings or dimensions, volume and material.
  • RCF, temperature, run time and frequency of use.
  • Special requirements for atmosphere, interfaces or installation environment.

For nitrogen or other inert-gas configurations, the gas, purpose and technical conditions are explicitly defined. Inert-gas purging does not automatically imply explosion protection or a corresponding approval.
